Zirconia ceramic implant for an anodontia treatment – Pia’s Story

Zirconia ceramic implant - Performance

Advantages of ceramic implants

Traditionally, dental implants have been made from titanium or titanium alloys. Alternatively, zirconia-based ceramic implants have been developed with similar characteristics of functional strength and osseointegration. Ceramic implants offer advantages in certain settings in patients who object to metal dental implants.

In the presented case:

The new Monotype 3.3 mm full ceramic implants of the latest generation were used. The implants were made of zirconiumdioxide and had a micro-rough surface topography. To our advantage the ZLA™ surface by Straumann®  has similar properties to the well-known SLA surface.

Zirconia is with less plaque accumulation a metal-free alternative to titanium implants

Yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia

Since 2004, the survival rates of CA implants had significantly improved compared to NCA implants. CA 1-piece zirconia implants showed similar 1- and 2-year mean survival rates and marginal bone loss after 1 year compared with published data for titanium implants.

Nineteen final publications from thirteen investigations were included. The results from the meta‐analysis indicated that zirconia abutments (Zi) experienced less increase in BOP values over time and less plaque accumulation when compared with titanium abutments.

Ceramic Implants – Light transmission

These zirconia ceramic implants not only offer biological advantages

Some additional advantages in certain patients and situations are for example when esthetic light transmission effects the outcome, especially in situations with limited implant space.

Glass ionomer cement removal with Ketac Cem

Cement removal from Ceramic Monotype Implant restorations

This video shows a Ketac Cem glass ionomer cement removal from restorations luted to Ceramic Monotype Implant abutments with subgingival margins.

Conventional glass-ionomers cements are considered safe from allergic reactions because there is no rest monomers in the material composition. The main disadvantage of glass ionomer sealants or cements has been inadequate retention. However, in terms of cement removal it is a huge advantage.
